Aminul Islam's Departure from AIUDF

Guwahati, Mar 18: In the lead-up to the Assembly elections set for April 9, Aminul Islam, a prominent figure in the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), has stepped down from his position, citing personal reasons for his departure.

Islam, who has been affiliated with the party for two decades, communicated his resignation to party leader Badruddin Ajmal. He officially submitted his resignation on March 16.

Following his resignation, the Mankachar MLA faced a six-year suspension from the party due to alleged activities against its interests.

In his resignation letter, Islam expressed, “Considering the needs of my constituents, I resign from all roles, privileges, and my primary membership in the AIUDF.”

The AIUDF's suspension notice indicated that Islam's actions included supporting an opposition party, which was a significant factor in the disciplinary measures taken against him.

“His actions have adversely affected the organization and damaged the party's image. Such behavior constitutes misconduct and a serious breach of party principles, justifying disciplinary action,” the notice elaborated.

There is growing speculation that Islam might align himself with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), a partner in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

While Islam confirmed that discussions are ongoing, he stated that no final decision has been reached. “Conversations are happening, as some leaders have approached us. However, nothing is confirmed yet. We must either join another party or consider running independently, as we cannot forsake our supporters,” he remarked.

Keshab Mahanta, a senior AGP leader, acknowledged that Islam has made contact with their party. “Aminul Islam has reached out to us. He is a seasoned leader with electoral experience, but no decision has been made yet. More discussions will be necessary if he intends to join the AGP,” Mahanta informed the media.

Islam's resignation occurs at a pivotal moment as political parties adjust their strategies ahead of the elections. It remains uncertain whether he will ultimately join the AGP.
