AIUDF Calls for Halt to Eviction Drives in Assam

The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has called on the Assam government to suspend ongoing eviction drives, alleging discrimination against Muslim families in land patta allocations. AIUDF leaders highlighted the negative impact of these evictions on children's education and urged the Gauhati High Court to intervene. They also criticized the ruling BJP for politicizing the issue of Scheduled Tribe status for certain communities. The AIUDF's appeal comes as winter exams approach, emphasizing the need for immediate action to protect vulnerable populations.

AIUDF's Appeal to the Government

Guwahati, Dec 3: The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has requested the State government to put a stop to the ongoing eviction operations throughout Assam.

During a press conference, AIUDF vice president and MLA Aminul Islam (senior) accused the ruling BJP and the government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma of disseminating misleading information and propaganda concerning the eviction processes.

“Numerous individuals in Assam have received land pattas through Mission Basundhara initiatives. The criteria established for these pattas required families to have lived in the State for a minimum of three generations. However, not a single Muslim family has been awarded a patta, despite possessing valid documentation. This reflects a clear bias from the government. While many have received land pattas, members of a specific community have faced eviction instead,” Aminul Islam stated.

He emphasized that the government has the necessary systems to identify foreigners.

“If the government fails to identify illegal immigrants, it is their shortcoming. The term ‘suspected foreigners’ is being used to target a specific community, which is unacceptable in a democratic society. Furthermore, no assessments have been conducted to verify the backgrounds of those being evicted. Even individuals with myadi pattas have been affected by these eviction efforts,” the AIUDF vice president remarked.

He also claimed that these eviction drives have disrupted children's education and violated the Right to Education Act of 2009, urging the Gauhati High Court to initiate a suo moto case regarding this issue.

AIUDF general secretary (organization) and MLA Rafiqul Islam added that with winter approaching, various examinations are set to occur in the coming months.

“Evictions must be halted immediately. We implore the government to prevent further suffering for the impoverished,” he stated.

Referring to the ongoing Special Revision in Assam, Rafiqul Islam requested the Election Commission and the government to ensure that no legitimate voter is removed from the electoral list and that no ineligible voters are added. He emphasized that no ‘tourist’ voters from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar should be included in Assam’s electoral rolls.

He further accused the BJP of politicizing the issue of granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six communities in Assam.

“The BJP has done nothing for a decade. Now, at the conclusion of their second term, the report from the Group of Ministers has been submitted. This is merely a political maneuver. We believe that the demands of the six communities should be honored without infringing on the rights of existing STs,” Islam concluded.
