Compensation for Victims' Families

Mumbai: On Saturday, Air India announced that it has disbursed interim compensation to the families of 166 individuals who lost their lives in the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad last month.

Additionally, the airline is in the process of compensating the families of another 52 victims.

This incident, one of the most devastating air disasters in India in recent history, involved a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, designated as Air India flight AI171.

Out of the 242 passengers aboard, 241 perished, contributing to a total death toll of 260, which includes fatalities on the ground.

On June 14, Air India revealed plans to provide interim compensation of Rs 25 lakh, roughly GBP 21,500, to assist the families of both the deceased and survivors in meeting their immediate financial needs.

The airline stated, "Air India has issued interim compensation to the families of 147 of the 229 deceased passengers, along with the 19 individuals who died at the crash site."

Furthermore, the necessary documentation for 52 additional victims has been verified, and compensation will be progressively distributed to their families.

It is important to note that this interim payment will be deducted from any final compensation amount, as clarified by the Tata Group airline.

In a gesture of remembrance, the Tata Group has established 'The AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust' dedicated to the victims of the crash. They have also committed to aiding in the restoration of the BJ Medical College Hostel infrastructure, which suffered damage during the incident.
