Air India Express Under Scrutiny for Safety Violations
Air India Express finds itself embroiled in controversy once again due to a significant security lapse. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had reprimanded the airline in March for failing to replace engine parts on its Airbus A320 aircraft as mandated by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). These parts were required to be changed due to identified manufacturing defects that posed a risk of engine failure, potentially endangering the aircraft. Alarmingly, the airline is also accused of manipulating records to suggest that the maintenance was completed on time, which was not the case.

In a statement to Reuters, the airline acknowledged the oversight and mentioned that corrective actions and preventive measures have been implemented. This serious violation comes at a time when the Tata-owned airline group is undergoing intense scrutiny following a tragic accident involving an Air India Dreamliner in Ahmedabad in June, which resulted in the deaths of 241 out of 242 passengers on board, marking the worst aviation disaster in a decade. Although there is no direct link between the two incidents, it has highlighted the need for comprehensive safety inspections and adherence to procedures within the airline group.
Government data indicates that in 2023, authorities issued safety warnings or fines in 23 cases, with 11 related to Air India or Air India Express. Since acquiring Air India in 2022, the Tata Group has aimed to transform it into a globally reputable carrier. However, the airline continues to face persistent complaints from customers regarding aircraft conditions and onboard services, which have now been exacerbated by the deepening safety crisis.
