Air India Flight Cancellations Amid Iranian Airspace Shutdown

Air India has announced the cancellation of at least three flights to the United States on Thursday, following the closure of Iranian airspace. Additionally, some services to Europe may experience delays, according to sources.

As reported, two flights from the national capital to New York and Newark, along with one flight from Mumbai to New York, have been canceled.

In a statement on the social media platform X, the airline mentioned that due to the evolving situation in Iran and the subsequent closure of its airspace, flights passing through the region are now taking alternative routes, which may lead to delays.

Air India stated, “Some of our flights are being canceled as rerouting is currently not feasible.” The airline expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers due to this unexpected disruption.

Air India typically utilizes Iranian airspace for its flights to the US and Europe, with alternative routes now requiring flights to pass through Iraqi airspace.

Sources indicated that using Iraqi airspace would extend travel times and may not provide sufficient fuel for some services heading to the US.

Due to the closure of Pakistani airspace, Air India has already been using longer routes for several westbound flights.

IndiGo also posted on X, stating, “Some of our international flights have been affected due to the sudden closure of Iranian airspace. Our team is assessing the situation and working to provide the best possible options for affected passengers.”

SpiceJet similarly noted on X that its flights might be impacted due to the closure of airspace in Iran.

As tensions rise between Iran and the US, there are concerns that the situation could escalate into conflict between the two nations.
