AIMIM's Asaduddin Owaisi Plans Alliance to Challenge BJP in 2027 UP Elections
AIMIM's Strategy for Upcoming Elections
Asaduddin Owaisi, the president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), has expressed his party's readiness to form alliances with other opposition parties to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from regaining power in the 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. During his visit to Uttar Pradesh on June 16, Owaisi acknowledged the party's previous electoral defeat but emphasized that AIMIM is now intensifying its grassroots campaigning efforts. He stated, "We contested the elections in 2017 but did not succeed... We are making greater efforts now and have learned from our past mistakes and shortcomings."
Preparations for the 2027 Elections
Owaisi revealed that party leader Shaukat Ali and his team have been deployed across Uttar Pradesh to prepare for the upcoming elections. He noted, "With elections scheduled in UP for 2027, our leader Shaukat Ali and the entire team are focused on these preparations." Owaisi also expressed his willingness to join an anti-BJP coalition to prevent the fragmentation of opposition votes. In response to claims that AIMIM benefits the BJP by splitting secular votes, he cited instances of cross-voting among other opposition parties during recent Rajya Sabha elections, where three Congress MLAs and one Muslim MLA from RJD did not support their own parties.
Call for Unity Against BJP
He stated, "I have mentioned that if an alliance is formed to stop the BJP from coming back to power, I am ready... Our goal is to ensure that our candidates win and become legislators. This is not about division. I have also urged for alliances in Bihar, and our president Akhtarul Iman had sent a letter regarding this, which was ignored, leading to the results you have seen. In the Rajya Sabha elections, three Congress MLAs and one Muslim MLA from RJD did not support their party."
Addressing Allegations Against AIMIM
Owaisi dismissed the notion of AIMIM being a 'spoiler' for larger secular parties and referenced past coalition proposals that were overlooked. He remarked, "Whenever I contest elections, I am always accused of this. I have no issue with your forming alliances. Last time, we allied with Babu Singh Kushwaha, who is now an MP from Jaunpur representing the Samajwadi Party."
