AIIMS Delhi Introduces Night Shelter for Patients to Ease Registration Process
New Initiative at AIIMS Delhi
New Delhi, January 5, 2026: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi has taken a significant step to alleviate the long-standing issues faced by patients and their caregivers. In collaboration with the CRPF, the 'Aashray' night shelter facility has begun issuing OPD registration tokens. This initiative will free patients from the need to wait in line outside the hospital during cold nights.
According to AIIMS Director Dr. M Srinivas, this service is designed for patients arriving at the hospital for OPD services during the night. Previously, these patients and their families had to spend the night on the pavement or in open areas of the hospital, increasing health risks due to cold and discomfort. Now, patients arriving at night are transported to the 'Aashray' center using eco-friendly electric shuttle buses.
Upon arrival at the 'Aashray' center, patients are issued token numbers based on their reporting order. The following morning, these tokens will prioritize their registration for OPD services, eliminating the need for long queues and rush in the morning. The center provides free meals, clean blankets, hygienic toilets, and safe shelter for patients.
Currently, the 'Aashray' facility can accommodate approximately 250 individuals and is fully operational. According to AIIMS officials, this initiative has improved crowd management in the OPD area and significantly reduced patient discomfort. There are plans to expand this service in the future based on demand.
