AIIMS-Bhubaneswar Shines with National Award for Organ Transplantation Excellence
AIIMS-Bhubaneswar Receives Prestigious Award
New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhubaneswar has been honored with the esteemed title of ‘Emerging Government Institution in Organ Transplantation’ during the 16th Indian Organ Donation Day (IODD) event held in New Delhi on Monday. This celebration was organized by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The award was conferred by Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Anupriya Patel, alongside notable figures such as Punya Salila Srivastava, Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Loveneesh G Krishna, Director General of Health Services (DGHS), Additional Secretary Vijay Nehra, and Dr. Anil Kumar, Director of NOTTO.
Representatives from AIIMS-Bhubaneswar, including President Dr. Anita Saxena, Executive Director & CEO Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, Medical Superintendent Dr. Prabhas Ranjan Tripathy, and Dr. Bramhadatta Pattnaik, Head of the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, accepted the award on behalf of the institution. AIIMS-Bhubaneswar was recognized for its significant achievements in organ transplantation, particularly the impressive rise in transplant operations—from 16 in 2024 to 63 in 2025—showcasing the institute’s rapid growth and commitment to providing top-tier transplant care.
Notably, AIIMS-Bhubaneswar stands out as the only AIIMS in India to receive this distinguished accolade, underscoring its leadership in organ transplantation and its expanding role in enhancing healthcare across the nation. Dr. Ashutosh Biswas expressed his appreciation, stating, “This national recognition highlights the unwavering dedication, collaborative efforts, and relentless commitment of our transplant surgeons, physicians, intensive care specialists, nursing staff, transplant coordinators, and support teams.” He also acknowledged the donor families whose altruistic choices have transformed the lives of numerous patients and inspired the community.
AIIMS-Bhubaneswar is dedicated to furthering its transplant services, embracing innovative technologies, and promoting organ donation awareness throughout Eastern India. Since initiating its transplant program, the institute has successfully conducted 78 kidney transplants—61 from living donors and 17 from deceased donors. Additionally, it has facilitated six successful organ donations and completed four living donor liver transplants along with one deceased donor liver transplant, showcasing its growing proficiency in multi-organ transplantation.
