AIADMK's Shift: 30 Legislators Back Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam Ahead of Key Floor Test
A Historic Turn in Tamil Nadu Politics
On Tuesday, Tamil Nadu's political landscape witnessed a significant shift as a group of at least 30 legislators, led by senior AIADMK leader CV Shanmugam, declared their support for Chief Minister Vijay's party, Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). This announcement comes just a day before the ruling TVK government is set to undergo its first floor test in the assembly.
While announcing their support, Shanmugam dismissed rumors of any factionalism within the AIADMK, asserting that there is no intention to fracture the party.
Context of the Support Announcement
This development arises amid reports suggesting that Shanmugam's faction was pushing for the resignation of party leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami. He clarified that AIADMK is not part of any coalition, indicating a lack of ties with the BJP. In the recent Tamil Nadu assembly elections, AIADMK secured 47 seats, making Shanmugam's faction the largest within the party.
Implications of the Floor Test
The support from Shanmugam's faction for TVK comes just before a crucial floor test in the Tamil Nadu assembly, where Chief Minister Vijay must demonstrate that he has the majority's backing. TVK emerged as the largest party in the elections, winning 108 seats but fell short of the majority by ten seats. Vijay formed the government with the assistance of Congress, leftist parties, VCK, and IUML.
Reflections on Recent Electoral Performance
During a press conference in Chennai, Shanmugam pointed to the party's electoral losses, noting that AIADMK only won 47 out of 234 assembly seats in the elections held on April 23. The DMK-led coalition had ousted AIADMK from power after a decade, with AIADMK securing just 75 seats in the previous elections. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, AIADMK managed to win only one out of 39 seats, and it did not secure any seats in the 2024 parliamentary elections. "The people's mandate is clearly in favor of Vijay as Chief Minister, and we must respect that," stated a legislator from Mailam.
Shanmugam, a former Rajya Sabha MP, expressed that the 30 legislators were displeased with reports of a potential DMK-AIADMK alliance aimed at challenging the TVK-led coalition, suggesting that Palaniswami aspired to become the chief minister through such a partnership. Following the support for TVK, only 17 legislators remain aligned with EPS.
Leadership Changes and Future Directions
Shanmugam further revealed that AIADMK legislators S.P. Velumani and G. Hari have been appointed as the leader and deputy leader of the legislative party, respectively. This move is seen as a significant blow to AIADMK, which has struggled to maintain its relevance since the passing of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in 2016.
Criticizing the proposed DMK-AIADMK alliance, Shanmugam emphasized the need to preserve AIADMK's foundational principles, stating that the party was established to uproot the DMK, which they view as a detrimental force in Tamil Nadu. He reiterated that there is no intention to dismantle AIADMK and that the party's welfare is paramount.
Call for Internal Review
Shanmugam mentioned that AIADMK legislators have requested EPS to convene a meeting to discuss the reasons behind their electoral defeats. He stated, "We faced setbacks not only in the recent elections but also in the previous ones. We have urged our general secretary to call for a general council meeting to analyze the causes of these losses and to strategize for the party's future growth and interests."
