AIADMK's Protest in Tamil Nadu Assembly
The legislators from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) staged a walkout from the Tamil Nadu Assembly. They claimed that they were not permitted to raise issues during the 'Zero Hour', causing a temporary disruption in the proceedings. Edappadi K. Palaniswami, the General Secretary of AIADMK, stated that despite repeated requests, the opposition was denied the opportunity to address public concerns. He mentioned, 'Today, during Zero Hour, the Speaker did not allow us to speak. Therefore, we decided to walk out. We are not being given a chance to voice our concerns inside the Assembly. We had requested the Speaker to allow us to discuss public issues, but we were denied that opportunity.'
Call for Discussion on Ammonia Gas Leak Incident
Additionally, legislators from the DMK and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) urged the Speaker to facilitate a detailed discussion regarding the ammonia gas leak incident in Tiruvallur during the ongoing session. They demanded accountability for this safety lapse and called for a comprehensive report. This protest coincided with demands from various parties, including DMK and leftist legislators, to discuss the ammonia gas leak that occurred at a seafood processing unit in Tiruvallur district. The death toll from the incident has risen to five, while 67 individuals are currently receiving treatment and are under medical supervision.
Assurances from Tamil Nadu Assembly
During this session, JCD Prabhakar from the Tamil Nadu Assembly assured members that they would be given time to raise these issues. He acknowledged that DMK, AIADMK, and several other members have requested a discussion on the ammonia gas leak incident at the seafood processing unit. 'I will provide the opposition members with an opportunity to speak,' he stated. The opposition is calling for an immediate debate in the Assembly regarding the impact of this incident on worker safety in the affected area and its environmental consequences.
