AIADMK Leadership Changes Amidst Confidence Vote

On Wednesday, Edappadi K. Palaniswami, the leader of the AIADMK, removed party officials Velumani and Shanmugam from their positions. This decision came shortly after 25 AIADMK legislators expressed their support for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay during a floor test in the assembly. Earlier, during a press conference held at his residence, Shanmugam criticized EPS and questioned the validity of the party whip issued prior to the confidence vote.

Palaniswami asserted that AIADMK legislators were never convened for a formal election of assembly leader, deputy leader, or whip, contradicting claims made by the EPS faction. He also alleged that a letter submitted to the Speaker by EPS was forged. The newly formed TVK government in Tamil Nadu successfully passed its first major test by winning the confidence vote in the assembly on Wednesday. The vote was comfortably passed with a margin of 144 to 22.

Chief Minister Vijay secured the confidence of the house with the backing of 25 rebel AIADMK legislators. The opposition DMK, which holds 59 seats in the 234-member assembly, staged a walkout during the proceedings in protest. The opposition accused the government of bribing legislators, a claim that Chief Minister Vijay vehemently denied. He emphasized that his government would remain secular and continue implementing welfare schemes initiated by previous administrations.

During the voting, 22 AIADMK legislators loyal to party leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami voted against the government. However, 25 other AIADMK legislators associated with the Shanmugam and Velumani faction supported the confidence motion, as they had previously announced. The government also received support from several other parties and members, including Congress, VCK, leftist parties, IUML, and independent MLA S. Kamaraj, who had been expelled from AMMK for supporting the TVK government.
