AIADMK Faces Major Setback as Rebel MLAs Resign from Tamil Nadu Assembly

The AIADMK has encountered a serious setback with the resignation of rebel MLAs from the Tamil Nadu Assembly. Following a meeting with party president JCD Prabhakar, these legislators are likely to join the Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. This move could significantly strengthen TVK, which has struggled for a majority in the Assembly. The resignations also highlight ongoing internal conflicts within AIADMK, led by figures questioning the leadership of Edappadi K. Palaniswami. This turmoil follows a disappointing electoral performance in 2026, where the party secured only 47 seats, raising questions about its future direction.

Rebel Legislators Depart from AIADMK

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) experienced a significant blow on Monday when dissenting legislators resigned from the Tamil Nadu Assembly following a meeting with party president JCD Prabhakar. These rebel MLAs are expected to soon join the Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. Among the three defectors is K. Maragatham Kumaravel, who won the Madurantakam seat by defeating TVK candidate Ezhil Katherine Ezhilmali by a margin of approximately 7,194 votes. Another legislator, S. Jayakumar, secured victory over DMK candidate N.D. Venkatachalam in the Perundurai constituency with a difference of 9,693 votes, while TVK's V.P. Arunachalam finished third with 59,483 votes.

Further Resignations and Implications

Additionally, AIADMK's P. Satyabama has also stepped down from the Assembly. Satyabama recently triumphed in the Tamil Nadu elections, defeating DMK candidate T. Indirani in the Dharapuram seat by a margin of 16,727 votes, with TVK's Gauri Chitra coming in third with 46,438 votes. Should the rebel leaders join TVK, it would significantly bolster Vijay's party, which has struggled to achieve a simple majority in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly. Furthermore, their resignations will weaken AIADMK, which is already grappling with internal dissent. The ongoing rebellion within AIADMK is spearheaded by SP Velumani and C.V. Shanmugam, who have raised concerns about the leadership of Edappadi K. Palaniswami, commonly referred to as EPS among his supporters. Velumani and Shanmugam are advocating for Palaniswami to resign from the position of AIADMK General Secretary to pave the way for new leadership. This turmoil has emerged following the party's disappointing performance in the 2026 Tamil Nadu elections, where they secured only 47 seats.
