Ahmedabad, June 3: The Crime Branch of Ahmedabad has apprehended 131 individuals believed to be Bangladeshi nationals during an extensive verification operation conducted throughout various regions of the city. Additionally, investigations are ongoing for another 160 individuals, as reported by police officials on Wednesday.

Sharad Singhal, the Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), informed that the initiative was not limited to a specific area but spanned several densely populated neighborhoods.

He stated, "Out of 291 individuals, 131 have been confirmed," noting that the remaining individuals are currently undergoing documentation checks and identity verification.

The operation included areas such as Narol, Vatva, Naroda, Danilimda, Sola, Sarkhej, among others.

Authorities indicated that this action is part of ongoing verification efforts aimed at identifying suspected illegal immigrants residing in Ahmedabad.

Those detained have been taken to the Crime Branch for further questioning, with inter-agency collaboration in progress to verify their documents and immigration status.

This recent operation follows a series of similar enforcement actions in Gujarat over the past few years.

In April of the previous year, Gujarat Police arrested over 1,000 suspected illegal Bangladeshi nationals in a coordinated pre-dawn operation across Ahmedabad and Surat, with senior officials confirming that extensive interrogations were conducted based on intelligence regarding illegal residency clusters.

In another significant operation in 2024, the Ahmedabad Crime Branch detained 48 Bangladeshi nationals during raids connected to alleged forgery and human trafficking networks.

Officials mentioned that they are currently examining fake identity documents, including Aadhaar and PAN cards, as part of the investigation.

Previous enforcement actions have led to deportations following lengthy legal processes.

In one instance, 16 Bangladeshi nationals were deported from Ahmedabad after being detained in earlier raids, while others remained under verification and legal scrutiny before repatriation procedures were finalized.

Authorities emphasized that the current operation is a continuation of regular verification drives aimed at identifying undocumented foreign nationals and investigating suspected cases of identity fraud.
