Ahmed Shehzad Critiques PCB After Pakistan's ODI Series Loss to Bangladesh
Shehzad's Criticism of PCB Following ODI Defeat
Former Pakistan cricketer Ahmed Shehzad has openly criticized the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in light of the national team's recent 1-2 defeat in the ODI series against Bangladesh. Under the captaincy of Shaheen Afridi, Pakistan lost the first match but managed to bounce back in the second ODI, despite a controversial run-out involving Salman Ali Agha by Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
Unfortunately, the team could not clinch the series, suffering an 11-run loss in the final ODI. This defeat follows their disappointing exit from the T20 World Cup 2026, where they finished in the Super 8 stage with one win, one loss, and one match that ended without a result.
Shehzad Questions PSL's Competitiveness
Shehzad did not hold back in his criticism of the PCB, questioning its investment strategies and the diminishing competitiveness of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). He contrasted the PSL unfavorably with the Indian Premier League (IPL), which he described as a platform where top international players engage in intense competition.
"The IPL showcases global superstars in high-stakes matches, pushing each other to excel and secure better contracts for the next season, creating a level of competitiveness that is unmatched," Shehzad stated.
"The PSL has lost that edge. While it may have had it in its early years, the last three to four seasons have seen a decline. Now, many of the main figures are retired players who have transitioned into commentary roles, which diminishes the league's appeal," he added.
Concerns Over PSL's Core Player Quality
Continuing his critique, Shehzad raised concerns about the quality of the PSL's core players and their potential to uplift both the league and the national team. He remarked, "The caliber of players promoted by the PCB as the face of the PSL has not reached the expected level. These 6-8 players are also the faces of our national team. Can they truly change Pakistan's cricketing fate?"
The PSL has faced scrutiny in recent years for its declining quality and lack of depth compared to other leading T20 leagues. Established in 2016, the PSL has maintained a six-team format over its 11 seasons without expansion, while the IPL, which began in 2008, has evolved from an 8-team to a 10-team tournament, significantly enhancing its scale and global reach.
PCB's Dependence on the Same Stars
Shehzad further criticized the PCB for its over-reliance on the same PSL stars year after year, questioning their effectiveness in delivering results for both the league and the national team. He stated, "You have invested in these players, endorsed them, and given them leadership roles in the PSL. You have entrusted the entire Pakistan cricket team to these few individuals and their agents. What have they achieved? They have not secured any victories for Pakistan."
He specifically referenced prominent players like Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Afridi, who, despite being the faces of the PSL, have not led the national team to any major ICC tournament victories recently, with the exception of Azam, who was part of the 2017 Champions Trophy-winning squad.
