AGP's Strategy for the 2026 Elections

Sivasagar, Feb 27: Keshab Mahanta, a prominent leader of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and a Cabinet Minister, announced that the party aims to prioritize young and dynamic candidates in the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections. However, he noted that the final candidate selection will hinge on the seat-sharing agreement within the NDA.

During a press interaction in Sivasagar on Thursday, Mahanta expressed the party's commitment to fostering new talent in politics, emphasizing the inclusion of fresh faces in the 2026 assembly elections.

“This time, AGP will present new candidates. We are giving priority to younger individuals,” Mahanta stated.

He avoided making definitive comments regarding the candidacy of senior AGP member Pradip Hazarika, who previously represented the now-abolished Amguri constituency, mentioning that discussions are ongoing within the party and among alliance partners.

Mahanta highlighted the significance of the Amguri seat, which has historically been a stronghold for AGP, especially after the recent delimitation process.

“The Amguri constituency was dissolved during delimitation, with parts merging into Nazira and others into Sivasagar. Given AGP's past successes in this area, we are optimistic about reaching a favorable decision through discussions,” he remarked.

He further noted that since Hazarika served as the MLA for Amguri, the party is currently evaluating its prospects in the Sivasagar Assembly segment.

“The decision on candidate nominations will follow the confirmation of seat-sharing among our alliance partners. Our discussions regarding seat-sharing are progressing well,” Mahanta added.

On the topic of the proposed Mulagabharu Kshetra, Mahanta, who also serves as the MLA for Kaliabor, mentioned that he has initiated efforts to honor the legacy of the esteemed Ahom warrior.

“As part of my duties as the Kaliabor MLA, I have already erected a statue of Mula Gabhoru in my constituency,” he stated.

Regarding the location for the Mulagabharu memorial, Mahanta indicated that the government will make the final decision.

“If the project can be expanded, I would welcome it. The Mulagabharu Kshetra can be established at any appropriate site, and the government will ultimately decide,” he concluded.
