Guwahati, May 6: The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has officially backed Himanta Biswa Sarma for another term as Chief Minister of Assam, following a successful meeting of the BJP legislature party scheduled around May 10 or 11.

This decision was reached during a gathering of the AGP legislature party in Guwahati, celebrating the NDA's significant win in the recent Assembly elections.

After a joint meeting with the BJP at the party's Ambari headquarters, AGP president Atul Bora announced that the legislators fully support Sarma's leadership, highlighting the developmental achievements of the previous administration.

“In light of the remarkable progress made under Himanta Biswa Sarma's leadership in the last term, our legislature party has unanimously nominated him to lead the new government,” Bora stated.

The endorsement followed Bora's own unanimous election as the leader of the AGP legislature party, attended by the newly elected MLAs.

Bora expressed gratitude to the citizens of Assam for their strong support for the AGP-led NDA alliance and honored the martyrs of the Assam Agitation.

During the first legislature party meeting after the election results, the AGP also established key organizational roles within the Assembly.

Keshab Mahanta was appointed as the deputy leader of the AGP legislature party, while Tapan Das, a first-time MLA from Dimoria, was named the legislature party secretary. Dharmeswar Roy, another first-time legislator from Bajali, was designated as the chief whip.

Bora mentioned that the newly elected legislators are committed to advancing their constituencies and protecting the interests of Assam and its indigenous populations.

Both Bora and Mahanta, who successfully retained their Bokakhat and Kaliabor seats, were part of the previous NDA governments led by the BJP in the state.

The BJP-led NDA has returned to power in Assam for a third consecutive term, having secured a substantial mandate in the Assembly elections.

The BJP won 82 seats in the 126-member Assembly, while its allies AGP and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) each secured 10 seats.
