AGP Pushes for Biswanath Seat Ahead of Assam Assembly Elections
AGP's Demand for Biswanath Constituency
Biswanath, January 2: As the Assam Assembly elections approach, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) is ramping up its efforts to secure the Biswanath Assembly seat, emphasizing the party's historical significance and contributions to the area.
Previously, the AGP had relinquished this seat to its coalition partner, the BJP, during the 2016 and 2021 elections. However, the party is now advocating for a reassessment of this arrangement.
During a press conference on Friday, AGP general secretary Prabin Hazarika stated that the party's leadership has tasked him with enhancing organizational efforts in Biswanath. He reminisced about the AGP's past successes, particularly noting that in 2011, despite having only 10 MLAs, the party successfully held the Biswanath seat.
Hazarika expressed his readiness to run in the upcoming elections if nominated by the party, emphasizing the importance of addressing the local populace's needs. He remarked, “With elections imminent in the next couple of months, we believe it is time for the AGP to contest from Biswanath. Our organizational strength here is robust, and we hope the alliance will support our request.”
Despite his aspirations, Hazarika dismissed the idea of running as an Independent candidate if he does not receive a party ticket. “Regardless of the outcome, I will remain loyal to the AGP. My roots are deeply embedded in this party since its inception, and I will not consider an Independent run,” he affirmed.
AGP members in Biswanath have reported an increase in political activities recently, claiming that senior leaders have shown a favorable response to the call for an AGP candidate in the constituency.
In related news, AGP president Atul Bora announced on December 31 that the party would soon finalize its seat-sharing agreement with the BJP, taking all pertinent factors into account.
Addressing reporters at the party headquarters on New Year's Eve, Bora stated that the AGP is gearing up for the 2026 Assembly elections with renewed enthusiasm, aiming to bolster regional political influence in Dispur.
“In 2025, we focused on strengthening our organization statewide. With the elections just months away, every AGP member is actively working at the grassroots level. Our goal is to enhance regional political power in the upcoming Assembly,” Bora concluded.
