AGP Plans Seat-Sharing Talks with BJP Ahead of 2026 Elections
AGP's Strategy for Upcoming Elections
Guwahati, Jan 1: The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) announced on Wednesday that it will soon make a decision regarding the seat-sharing arrangement with its coalition partner, the BJP, after evaluating all pertinent factors.
AGP president and State minister Atul Bora emphasized the importance of collaborating with a national party for the development of the State. He noted that several regional parties across India have successfully adopted similar strategies in other regions. Bora pointed out that previous AGP administrations struggled to implement the Assam Accord due to insufficient backing from the central government.
During a media interaction at the party headquarters on New Year's Eve, Bora expressed that the AGP is preparing to contest the upcoming Assembly elections in 2026 with renewed enthusiasm, aiming to solidify regional political influence in Dispur.
He mentioned that party members are energized about the forthcoming elections, especially in areas where the AGP has a strong presence.
"In 2025, we have made efforts throughout the State to bolster the party. The year 2026 is crucial for us, with only a few months remaining until the Assembly elections. Currently, every AGP member is actively engaging at the grassroots level to prepare for the elections. Our goal is to enhance regional power in Dispur in the next election," Bora stated.
Regarding the Assam Accord's implementation, Bora, who also oversees the Implementation of Assam Accord Department, expressed optimism that the State government will fulfill all provisions of the Accord in the New Year.
"The Assam Accord is central to AGP's mission. Under the current State administration, we have made significant progress in implementing the Accord. I am hopeful that by 2026, we will complete the remaining aspects of the Assam Accord," he asserted.
Bora further acknowledged that Assam faces numerous challenges and that the party is committed to fostering an entrepreneurial environment within the State. On the topic of granting Scheduled Tribe status to six communities in Assam, he stated, "We support the demand from these six communities while ensuring that the interests of the existing Scheduled Tribe communities are protected."
AGP working president Keshab Mahanta, who was also present during the media interaction, affirmed that the State government aims to complete the remaining tasks related to the Assam Accord's implementation by 2026.
