AGP Leader Seeks Rajya Sabha Nomination for Tea Garden Community

Pramod Bhengra, president of Asom Chah Parishad and a key figure in the AGP, is advocating for the nomination of a candidate from the tea garden community for the Rajya Sabha. With over 20 years of experience in the party, he emphasizes the need for representation from this significant demographic, which has been overlooked in past nominations. As the AGP prepares to select candidates, Bhengra remains hopeful that his application will be considered. The party has formed a committee to finalize nominations ahead of the June 9 deadline.

AGP Leader Seeks Rajya Sabha Nomination for Tea Garden Community

AGP President Advocates for Tea Garden Representation

Dibrugarh, June 7: Pramod Bhengra, the president of Asom Chah Parishad, which is the tea cell of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), has expressed his interest in being nominated for the vacant Rajya Sabha positions.

Bhengra is a prominent advocate for the tea garden workforce within the AGP in Upper Assam. With over two decades of involvement in the party, he has held various roles in both affiliated organizations and the main body of the regional party.

He pointed out that despite AGP being the largest regional party in Assam, it has yet to nominate anyone from the tea garden community to the Rajya Sabha.

While the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have previously nominated individuals from the tea garden sector, AGP has not done so. Bhengra emphasized that given the tea garden community's significant presence in Upper Assam, the party should seriously consider his nomination.

Currently, one of the two Rajya Sabha seats is occupied by AGP, and Bhengra remains optimistic that his application will be taken into account for the party's nomination.

On Thursday, AGP established a three-member committee to oversee the selection process for Rajya Sabha candidates.

Minister Atul Bora, after a meeting in Guwahati, noted that numerous individuals are submitting their nominations for the Rajya Sabha from the party.

“We have discussed the nominations for the Rajya Sabha seat. The deadline for nominations is June 9. This committee will engage with all aspirants and reach a consensus on the final candidate. We aim to announce our choice in the coming days,” stated Atul Bora.
