Afghanistan Focuses on Rashid Khan's Health Ahead of Test Series

Afghanistan's cricket team is prioritizing the long-term fitness of star leg-spinner Rashid Khan as they prepare for an upcoming Test series against Zimbabwe. Captain Rahmat Shah has confirmed that the team will not rush Rashid's return to Test cricket, emphasizing the importance of his health and workload management. With only six Test appearances compared to over 245 in white-ball formats, Rashid's absence is due to back injury concerns. The first Test against Zimbabwe is set to begin on November 5 in Sharjah, with the second Test following shortly after. Rahmat remains hopeful for Rashid's recovery and inclusion in future Test matches.

Afghanistan's Commitment to Rashid Khan's Recovery

Afghanistan is optimistic about Rashid Khan rejoining their Test squad once he fully recovers. Captain Rahmat Shah emphasized that the team will prioritize his long-term fitness over a hasty return to Test cricket. Rashid has participated in only six Tests, while he has over 245 appearances in white-ball formats. His absence from Test matches is due to ongoing concerns regarding his back injury and the need for effective workload management.

Ensuring Rashid's Well-Being

Ahead of the two-match Test series against Zimbabwe, Rahmat mentioned that the medical team has advised against Rashid's participation in Test matches at this time. "The medical staff and physiotherapists have recommended that he should not play Test games right now as he is not yet ready," Rahmat stated, referencing the ICC.

He further noted, "We cannot afford to lose Rashid for white-ball formats; he is a crucial player. I hope he recovers soon, as he enjoys Test cricket. However, if his body isn't cooperating, we will heed the medical team's advice and avoid taking risks."

Managing Workload for Test Cricket

Rahmat highlighted the importance of managing Rashid's workload, especially given the rigorous demands of Test cricket. "He is our primary spinner, and when he is in the team, I will rely on him to bowl frequently during long partnerships," he explained, according to the ICC.

"The workload in Tests is significantly higher compared to shorter formats like T20, where a bowler only delivers four overs in a three-hour game. In Tests, the physical demands are greater, and due to his past back injury, Rashid must carefully manage his workload," he added.

Looking Ahead to the Series

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his immediate return, Rahmat confirmed that Rashid is still part of Afghanistan's long-term Test strategy. "I have had personal discussions with him and the Afghanistan Cricket Board. Once he is fully fit, he will undoubtedly be included in the Test squad," Rahmat stated.

Afghanistan is set to face Zimbabwe after drawing their last Test match against Bangladesh last month, showcasing a strong performance on the final day. The first Test against Zimbabwe is scheduled to commence on November 5 in Sharjah, with the second Test taking place from November 13 to 17 at the same location.
