Addressing Microplastic Pollution in the Brahmaputra: A New Study's Findings

Guwahati, Aug 15: A recent study funded by the North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd (NEDFi) has underscored the escalating issue of microplastic pollution along the banks of the Brahmaputra River, recommending on-site remediation strategies to tackle this pressing concern.
The report, titled ‘Survey and Studies on Remediation of Microplastic on Shorelines of Brahmaputra River’, was unveiled during the OCTAVATE 2026 technology conclave, hosted by the NEST Cluster of IIT Guwahati from August 10 to 12.
The event saw the participation of notable figures including North Eastern Council Secretary Satinder Kumar Bhalla, Ministry of DoNER Director Vijay Kumar Goel, and IIT Guwahati Director Prof Devendra Jalihal, along with various stakeholders and delegates.
Led by Prof Vimal Katiyar and his research team at IIT Guwahati, the study investigates the levels of microplastic contamination in the Brahmaputra and assesses viable remediation techniques. The findings indicate that microplastic pollution poses a significant threat to freshwater ecosystems worldwide.
The Brahmaputra River, crucial for the livelihoods and biodiversity of the Northeast, is increasingly contaminated by fragmented plastics such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyvinyl chloride. Factors such as urban runoff, industrial waste, and hydrological processes contribute to this issue.
Field sampling was conducted at over 20 carefully chosen sites, including urban, rural, industrial, and treatment plant areas. Advanced methods like Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and microscopy were employed to analyze and identify microplastics.
The researchers also explored practical remediation options, such as floating barriers and biofilm-assisted degradation, to assess their effectiveness in real-world conditions.
This study aims to enhance environmental resilience, safeguard biodiversity within the Brahmaputra ecosystem, and promote a future that is resilient to plastic pollution in the Northeast. The contributions of NEDFi in initiating this field study and formulating policy recommendations were acknowledged by attendees at the event.
