Actor Vijay Interrogated by CBI Over Karur Stampede Incident
Vijay's CBI Interrogation
On Monday evening, actor and leader of the Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), Vijay, exited the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office after undergoing approximately six and a half hours of questioning. According to sources, the interrogation commenced earlier in the day and continued until the evening. Reports suggest that Vijay may be summoned for further questioning in the future. The CBI has not released any official statements regarding the outcomes of the interrogation. As per media reports, investigators inquired about the alleged delays and mismanagement during the crowd control at the rally held in Karur last September.
Tragic Incident in Karur
The stampede, which occurred nearly 400 kilometers from Chennai, resulted in the tragic deaths of 41 individuals, including nine children, and left over 50 others injured. This incident is considered one of the deadliest political rally disasters in the state in recent years. The case was handed over to the CBI following a petition filed by Vijay's party, which called for an independent investigation. This move is seen as an effort to ensure transparency and accountability in examining the causes of the disaster.
Vijay's Response to the Incident
Vijay, a prominent figure in Tamil cinema for over three decades, began drawing large crowds after the launch of TVK in 2024. On the day of the rally, a significant number of supporters gathered from the afternoon. The unfortunate event unfolded around 7:30 PM when Vijay started addressing the crowd from atop his campaign vehicle. As the crowd swelled, chaos ensued when several individuals fainted, including women and children, leading to panic among the attendees.
Eyewitness Accounts
Witnesses reported that Vijay interrupted his speech to throw water bottles to distressed supporters and repeatedly called for police assistance as the situation escalated. Following the stampede, Vijay expressed his sorrow and condolences to the families of the victims through a social media post. He stated, “I extend my heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their loved ones in Karur. I pray for the swift recovery of those receiving treatment in the hospital.”
