Condemnation of Violence in Bangladesh
On Saturday, Abu Azmi, a legislator from the Samajwadi Party, expressed strong condemnation of the brutal killing of a Hindu youth in Bangladesh. He emphasized that anyone who commits wrongdoing should face severe punishment. However, Azmi also raised concerns about the treatment of minorities in India, claiming that Muslims who fought for the country's independence are now labeled as traitors.
Justice for All
Speaking to reporters, Azmi stated that whether it involves Hindus or Muslims, any act of wrongdoing should be condemned universally. He questioned, "Shouldn't I first condemn the incidents happening in my own country?"
Political Reactions
In a related context, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor also condemned the mob killing of a Hindu man named Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh, who was accused of blasphemy. Tharoor expressed his sorrow over this tragic incident on social media, praising the Bangladeshi government's condemnation of the violence.
Bangladesh Government's Response
The interim government of Bangladesh has also denounced the incident, stating, "We strongly condemn the brutal killing of a Hindu individual in Mymensingh. There is no place for such violence in the new Bangladesh, and the perpetrators of this heinous crime will not be spared." This condemnation comes at a time when the government, led by Mohammad Yunus, has issued its first detailed response to the widespread unrest in the country, urging citizens to oppose acts of mob violence.
Criticism of Bihar Chief Minister
Amidst these discussions, Azmi criticized Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for allegedly attempting to remove a woman's hijab during a public event, an incident that went viral on social media. Azmi stated, "What he did was absolutely wrong. I strongly condemn it. Such behavior from someone in a position like that of a Chief Minister should lead to legal action against him."
