Bangar Discusses Abhishek Sharma's Performance

Sanjay Bangar, the former batting coach of India, shared insights on the remarkable improvement of Abhishek Sharma, the star opener and top T20 batter, during the ongoing T20 World Cup. He commended Sharma for adopting a more effective technique, emphasizing his use of straight-bat shots and respect for the bowlers in the match against Zimbabwe.

After a challenging start in the tournament, Sharma managed to score a fifty in India's Super 8 match against Zimbabwe, showcasing his ability to bounce back.

Sharma's Adjustments and Strengths

While appearing on JioHotstar, Bangar noted that Sharma's earlier dismissals were due to his attempts at horizontal-bat shots when facing new balls. However, his recent performance demonstrated a shift towards playing straighter shots. Bangar remarked, "Against Zimbabwe, he respected the bowlers and played the ball straight, which significantly increased his chances of success. His ability to hit through the off-side is a key strength, especially since many players tend to avoid that area when aiming for sixes. If bowlers maintain pace and target the fourth-stump line, he can score freely over covers and mid-off, where he has been accumulating most of his runs."

Samson's Role in the Opening Partnership

Bangar also highlighted the strategic decision to introduce Sanju Samson into the opening pair, breaking the left-handed trio at the top. This right-left combination proved effective against Zimbabwe, with Sharma and Samson opening the innings, while Ishan Kishan followed at No. 3.

He praised Samson for his proactive approach and movement within the crease, which created scoring opportunities and allowed India to establish a solid start during the power-play. Bangar explained, "Samson's dynamic play provided Abhishek with the time needed to settle in, contributing to a strong opening partnership. Prior to this match, India had been averaging less than 10 runs in their opening partnerships, so Samson's performance was crucial in changing that narrative."

India Achieves Record Total Against Zimbabwe

After some initial struggles, India seems to have found the right batting combination for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. The new opening duo of Sharma (55) and Samson (24) set the tone early, with significant contributions from Kishan (38), Suryakumar Yadav (33), Hardik Pandya (50*), and Tilak Varma (44*). Together, they propelled India to a record total of 256/4, marking the highest score of the T20 World Cup to date and the second-largest in the tournament's history against Zimbabwe.

This impressive performance sets the stage for a crucial match against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, which will determine the final knockout stage spot in Kolkata on March 1.
