Abhishek Banerjee to Report Attack to Lok Sabha Speaker and Seek Legal Action
Abhishek Banerjee's Response to Attack in West Bengal
Abhishek Banerjee, a Member of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), plans to inform Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla about the attack he experienced in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal, and intends to pursue legal action regarding the incident. According to party sources, this information was disclosed on Monday. Banerjee was assaulted with bricks, stones, and eggs while visiting families affected by post-election violence in Sonarpur on Saturday. He sustained an eye injury and accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating the attack, claiming it was an attempt on his life. Furthermore, he alleged that the police failed to provide him with adequate protection.
Banerjee further accused the ruling party of targeting political opponents who question their authority. He stated that supporting the ruling party earns one the label of a patriot, while questioning them leads to becoming a target. He emphasized that standing with them brings praise, whereas opposing them results in attempts to silence dissent.
In connection with this incident, five individuals, including Akash Gayen, Kajal Das, Debashish Dutta, Nirmalya Sengupta, and Tapan Maity, were arrested and presented in the Baruipur court on Monday. The BJP condemned the attack but also suggested it reflects public anger against the TMC. West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh remarked that such incidents should not occur and attributed the unrest to growing discontent with the ruling party.
Public Reaction and Political Implications
Ghosh told reporters that what happened to Banerjee should not have taken place. He asserted that no one has the right to take the law into their own hands, yet the public has been enduring hardships for the past 15 years. He noted that everyone has faced oppression, and the public's frustration was bound to surface eventually. This incident comes amid reports of post-election violence in West Bengal, following the BJP's first government in the state, which has seen TMC's seats reduced to 80.
