Abhishek Banerjee Secures Legal Protection in Forged Signatures Case
Significant Legal Relief for Abhishek Banerjee
Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress and MP from Diamond Harbour, has received a crucial reprieve from the Calcutta High Court regarding the case of forged signatures of MLAs. The court has extended his protection from arrest and any severe actions for an additional month. Justice Kaushik Chanda upheld the previously granted interim protection and ordered that the case be listed for hearing again next week. This ruling ensures that Banerjee remains protected while the CID continues its investigation into allegations that party legislators' signatures were forged on documents submitted for the appointment of the opposition leader in the West Bengal Assembly.
This new order extends the relief initially granted on June 11, when the High Court directed Banerjee to appear at the CID headquarters in Bhawanipur and cooperate with investigators. Following this directive, Banerjee appeared before the agency and was interrogated for nearly six hours. With the extension of interim protection, he will continue to be shielded from strict actions while also being responsible for cooperating with the investigation.
Details of the Forged Signatures Case
The case revolves around allegations that, following the Trinamool Congress's defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections, several signatures of party MLAs were either forged or improperly obtained on a proposal submitted to Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose for the appointment of key opposition officials. The proposal suggested Shobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the leader of the opposition, Asima Patra and Naina Bandyopadhyay as deputy leaders, and Firhad Hakim as the chief whip.
The controversy erupted when expelled TMC MLAs Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha claimed that no meeting of the legislators took place on May 6 to approve the proposal. They asserted that they had only signed the attendance register on May 19 and accused party leaders of manipulating the records, raising questions about the authenticity of several signatures.
Subsequently, the CID took over the investigation into charges of fraud, forgery, and criminal conspiracy. Investigators searched TMC offices for the original proposal book and attendance register, questioning Abhishek Banerjee about the disputed documents and their submission to the Assembly Speaker. This investigation is unfolding amid TMC's significant electoral defeat and subsequent internal dissent.
