Abhishek Banerjee Criticizes Election Commission Over Notices to Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen
TMC's Abhishek Banerjee Takes Aim at Election Commission
Abhishek Banerjee, a Member of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress and nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has launched a strong critique against the Election Commission. He accused the commission of targeting the citizens of Bengal by sending a notice to Nobel Prize winner Amartya Sen for a Special Intensive Review (SIR) hearing.
In his remarks, Banerjee referenced the SIR notices sent to Indian cricketer Mohammad Shami and actor-politician Dev, asserting that it is unfortunate that a distinguished economist like Amartya Sen has also been summoned by the Election Commission. He described this situation as "sad."
Concerns Over Targeting of Notable Figures
Banerjee expressed his dismay, stating that it is deeply regrettable for the Election Commission to send a notice to Amartya Sen, who has contributed significantly to India's prosperity and global recognition. He also mentioned that notices were issued to cricketer Mohammad Shami and actor Dev, suggesting that this is an attempt to defame and harass these individuals. During a rally, he questioned why someone of Sen's stature, who has brought honor to the nation, is being called for an SIR hearing.
Allegations Against BJP-ECI Alliance
The TMC MP further claimed that the alliance between the BJP and the Election Commission is targeting the people of Bengal. He highlighted that Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, who has given the country a global identity, received a hearing notice. However, the Election Commission has yet to issue an official statement regarding Banerjee's claims about Sen.
