Abhishek Banerjee Claims State-Sponsored Terrorism After Violent Attack in West Bengal
TMC Leader Faces Violence During Visit
In Kolkata, TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee described himself as a target of "state-sponsored terrorism" following an attack in South 24 Parganas district. The incident occurred when he visited the home of an alleged victim of post-election violence in Sonarpur.
Banerjee alleged that BJP supporters were behind the assault, which involved stones and eggs being thrown at him. He expressed his sentiments on social media, stating, "Today, I stand as a victim of political violence and state-sponsored terrorism unleashed by those who claim to be the guardians of nationalism."
He expressed gratitude towards Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his support and also acknowledged the condemnation from Akhilesh Yadav, the chief of the Samajwadi Party, and Hemant Soren, the Chief Minister of Jharkhand.
Banerjee emphasized the importance of unity in defending India's democratic values, stating, "We stand united and resolute in our fight to protect the soul of India, defend its democratic institutions and uphold the values enshrined in our Constitution."
Reflecting on his past experiences, he mentioned his role in an all-party delegation representing India abroad, asserting his commitment to combating terrorism.
He criticized the current political climate under the BJP, claiming that support for the party equates to patriotism, while dissent leads to becoming a target.
During his visit, Banerjee faced a chaotic scene as a crowd hurled stones and attempted to physically assault him, necessitating intervention from security personnel.
After receiving initial medical attention at two private hospitals, he was not admitted due to a lack of significant injuries. He stated his preference to endure intimidation rather than compromise his principles.
Banerjee declared, "Power is temporary. The will of the people is permanent. I will bow only before the people, never before those in power."
He vowed to continue fighting against forces that threaten democracy, asserting that the politics of fear and violence would not prevail.
In response to Soren, he characterized the attack as indicative of a "state-sponsored and Centre-backed attempt" to intimidate opposition figures.
Banerjee condemned the administration's inaction during the violence, labeling it a deliberate assault on democracy. He reaffirmed his commitment to standing with the people and fighting for a democratic India.
He also remarked that the violence was not merely the result of a few unruly individuals, but rather a failure of governance that allowed such acts to occur.
