AASU Urges Assam Governor to Resolve Tezpur University Crisis
AASU's Appeal to the Governor
Guwahati, Dec 20: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has approached Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, presenting a memorandum that calls for urgent measures to address the ongoing issues at Tezpur University.
The AASU is not only seeking action against the controversial Vice-Chancellor Shambhu Singh but is also demanding an investigation into alleged irregularities within the institution. Furthermore, they insist that the Vice-Chancellor in-charge should assume full-time responsibilities.
The delegation from AASU included prominent members such as president Utpal Sarma, general secretary Samiran Phukan, and chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya.
Additionally, the AASU has submitted a list of demands to the Chief Minister.
The situation at Tezpur University intensified on December 15, when students and faculty initiated a nine-hour hunger strike, urging immediate action from the Union Ministry of Education (MoE) and decisive measures against Vice-Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh.
Opposition parties have previously called for a time-bound CBI investigation, while Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has advocated for dialogue over protests.
Since mid-September, the campus has been engulfed in unrest, with students accusing Vice-Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh and university officials of disrespecting singer Zubeen Garg during the mourning period following his passing.
