GUWAHATI, April 3: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has expressed strong discontent towards the Central government following the recent increases in the prices of premium petrol, commercial LPG, essential medicines, and toll fees, labeling it a ‘direct blow’ to the average citizen and calling for an immediate reversal of these hikes.
AASU highlighted that raising the prices of crucial daily items amidst rising inflation adds significant strain on the public. The student organization accused the government of adopting an anti-people stance and cautioned that such actions would further burden household finances.
According to AASU president Utpal Sarma and general secretary Samiran Phukan, this price increase occurs when many families are already finding it difficult to afford a single LPG cylinder. “Rather than offering relief, the government has opted to raise the costs of premium petrol, commercial gas, medicines, and tolls, which has severely impacted the populace,” they stated.
They also emphasized that the rise in essential medicine prices would directly affect healthcare accessibility, especially for those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Additionally, the increase in toll fees is expected to elevate transportation costs, which would subsequently affect the prices of various goods.
Describing the situation as ‘adding insult to injury,’ AASU leaders reiterated their demand for the Central government to retract all such anti-people decisions regarding price increases.
