Aaron Lukas Appointed Acting Director of National Intelligence Following Gabbard's Resignation
Transition in National Intelligence Leadership
President Donald Trump has announced that Aaron Lukas, the Principal Deputy Director, will take over as Acting Director of National Intelligence after Tulsi Gabbard's resignation. Gabbard, who will officially step down on June 30, 2026, cited her husband Abraham Williams' diagnosis of a rare and aggressive bone cancer as the reason for her departure. In her resignation letter shared on X, she expressed her commitment to support her husband during this challenging time, stating that she could not, in good conscience, continue in her demanding role while he faced such a serious battle.
Trump acknowledged Gabbard's contributions to the administration on Truth Social, commending her efforts and expressing his support for her family. He stated, “Tulsi has done an incredible job, and we will miss her,” while confirming Lukas's temporary leadership of the intelligence community. Gabbard's resignation follows the earlier departure of her deputy, Joe Kent, who resigned in protest against the Iran War, asserting that Iran did not pose an immediate threat to the United States. Gabbard has previously voiced her opposition to military action against Iran and cautioned against increased US involvement in the Middle East.
