AAP Announces Candidates for Assam Elections
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has released its initial list of candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections on Sunday. This list features 14 candidates, including the state vice president, Anurupa Dekaraja. Notably, all candidates in this first list hail from regions within the Brahmaputra Valley.
Key Candidates and Their Constituencies
According to the list shared by AAP's state in-charge, Rajesh Sharma, Anurupa Dekaraja will contest from the Guwahati Central seat. Additionally, Renuka Timungpi has been nominated from Bokajan. Other significant candidates include Achyut Das (Naoboicha), Tapan Gogoi (Sivasagar), Zahidul Islam Khan (Chenga), Pallav Saikia (Titabor), and Jinna Amir Hussain (East Goalpara). This time, AAP is entering the electoral fray in Assam without any alliances.
Current Assembly Composition
The Assam Assembly, which consists of 126 members, is currently dominated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), holding 64 seats. When combined with its allied parties, the Asom Gana Parishad (9), UPPL (7), and BPF (3), the ruling coalition is quite formidable. In contrast, the opposition comprises the Congress with 26 seats, the AIUDF with 15, and one member from the CPI(M). AAP aims to secure its first seat in the state this election.
Voting Scheduled for April 9
The Assam Assembly elections will take place in a single phase on April 9. The Election Commission has confirmed that the electoral process will be completed before the assembly's term ends on May 20. Approximately 25 million voters in the state will cast their ballots, with results expected to be announced on May 4.
