AAP's Strategy for Upcoming Assembly Elections

Ahead of the assembly elections, the coordinator of the Tamil Nadu unit of AAP, S A N Vaasigaran, announced the party's intention to participate in the elections. He mentioned that discussions with MK Stalin are essential for securing seats.

Following a meeting in Chennai on Wednesday, Vaasigaran stated that they had come to discuss the upcoming assembly elections at the DMK headquarters. They engaged with the DMK coordination committee and expressed their plans to participate in the elections, requesting several seats. He emphasized the need to uproot the BJP from Tamil Nadu, highlighting the necessity for a robust alliance. In the previous parliamentary elections, a significant national coalition was formed, which included AAP, with support from their leader Arvind Kejriwal.

Vaasigaran further mentioned that they plan to travel with the DMK alliance. He is optimistic about securing a substantial number of seats through discussions with MK Stalin, asserting that AAP will emerge as a significant force in the south. Tensions regarding seat distribution for the alliance arose when DMK proposed 25 seats to Congress, while Congress anticipated a larger share. On March 1, Girish Chodankar, in charge of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) for Tamil Nadu, stated that the offer of 25 seats was unacceptable, as they had communicated their expectations clearly.

In the 2021 elections, DMK won 133 seats, while Congress secured 18, PMK won five, VCK obtained four, and other parties collectively won eight seats. The DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), which included Congress, achieved a total of 159 seats. The NDA won 75 seats, with AIADMK emerging as the largest party in the coalition with 66 seats.
