Concerns Over Political Manipulation
Aam Aadmi Party's Manish Sisodia has voiced his opposition to the current delimitation process associated with the Women's Reservation Bill, expressing worries that it may be exploited for political gain. Speaking on Thursday, he acknowledged support for increasing women's representation in assemblies but criticized the ongoing process for disrupting the existing seat structure.
Criticism of Seat Manipulation
Manish Sisodia stated that while the Women's Reservation Bill is a commendable initiative, the manner in which the seat allocation is being altered is inappropriate. He accused Prime Minister Modi of establishing a trend where, if his party fails to win in a region, they reduce the number of votes from that area. He remarked, 'Now they are introducing this new law—where we cannot win elections, reduce the Lok Sabha seats, and where we do win, increase the seats. We oppose the delimitation; the way it is being executed is fundamentally wrong.'
Opposition Voices Against Government's Approach
Similarly, M.A. Baby from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) criticized the government's stance, suggesting that the same structure could have been followed based on the amendment passed by the Rajya Sabha in 2010. He described the current actions as a cunning strategy by the Narendra Modi government to implement delimitation under the guise of women's reservation.
Legislative Developments
Earlier on Thursday, the Lok Sabha introduced and discussed the Constitution (One Hundred Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026, the Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Delimitation Bill, 2026. Prime Minister Modi called for unanimous support for the bills, while opposition parties strongly opposed the delimitation bill.
