New Delhi, Aug 17: Delhi Police apprehended Sri Chand Vohra, a member of the Aam Aadmi Party's National Council, in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. His arrest stems from allegations of encroaching on property belonging to a Dalit party worker in Jaitpur Extension, southeast Delhi, as reported by sources on Monday.
Sri Chand Vohra is married to Hema Vohra, an AAP Councillor representing Jaitpur. He has been implicated in a police complaint lodged by Rakesh Kumar, a Dalit worker of the party, who claims he was unlawfully dispossessed from his property.
According to the complaint, Vohra reportedly discarded Kumar's belongings from the first floor of the property onto the street approximately three weeks ago.
Following an inquiry, police included charges related to a conspiracy to unlawfully seize the land, which could result in a maximum sentence of ten years.
Previously, the Delhi BJP criticized AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Saurabh Bharadwaj for their lack of response regarding the alleged mistreatment of their Dalit member.
Praveen Shankar Kapoor, the Delhi BJP Media Head and Spokesperson, condemned Vohra's actions against Rakesh Kumar and called for prompt police intervention.
Kapoor, alongside BJP Chief Spokesperson Anil Gupta, urged Kejriwal to ensure justice for the Dalit worker by reinstating his property rights and expelling both Vohra and his wife from the party.
Kapoor noted that Vohra has been closely associated with Kejriwal since the party's inception and had previously contested the Municipal Corporation elections in Jaitpur in 2017.
In 2022, Hema Vohra was elected as a Municipal Councillor.
In 2019, Vohra allegedly took over a vacant plot owned by Rakesh Kumar under the pretense of establishing a private political office.
After a year of requesting the return of his plot, Kumar faced continuous delays from Vohra until 2022.
Following Hema's election as a Municipal Councillor towards the end of 2022, BJP leaders claim that Kumar experienced further harassment, which only ceased after an FIR was filed at a police station about two weeks ago.
