Aakash Chopra Raises Concerns Over Punjab Kings' Bowling Ahead of IPL 2026
Bowling Concerns for Punjab Kings
Aakash Chopra, a former Indian cricketer, has expressed doubts regarding the bowling strength of Punjab Kings as they approach IPL 2026. He pointed out the uncertainty surrounding Lockie Ferguson's fitness and availability, emphasizing that the team's dependence on foreign seamers is significant, especially beyond Arshdeep Singh. Chopra noted that the franchise did not significantly enhance its spin options during the auction.
Chopra observed that Punjab Kings adopted a cautious strategy at the IPL 2026 auction after retaining 21 players. With Glenn Maxwell leaving the IPL, the team shifted focus to Cooper Connolly, acquiring him for ₹3 crore, along with new signings Ben Dwarshuis, Pravin Dubey, and Vishal Nishad. He praised Connolly's acquisition as 'phenomenal' but highlighted ongoing concerns about the overall bowling lineup.
Regarding pace resources, Chopra mentioned that Punjab's bowling heavily relies on international quicks, noting that Marco Jansen is currently in 'phenomenal form' and available. However, he raised alarms about Ferguson, stating he had 'not heard good stories' about the New Zealand bowler's fitness. Ferguson participated in only four matches in IPL 2025 due to a leg injury and recently faced a calf issue while playing for Desert Vipers in the ILT20.
Despite having a roster of seamers, Chopra believes that Punjab Kings are still 'a little light in bowling.' The franchise had previously acquired Mitchell Owen and retained him, with additional options like Xavier Bartlett, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Vijaykumar Vyshak. While these players provide some coverage, he suggested that the bowling attack lacks the necessary depth and reliability for a lengthy tournament.
Chopra also pointed out that spin bowling is another area of concern. He anticipated that Punjab would make more decisive upgrades to their spin department during the auction but felt the improvements were minimal. Yuzvendra Chahal, whom he described as 'excellent,' leads the spin unit, with Harpreet Brar adding versatility. However, he believes there is insufficient depth beyond these two, calling spin 'one thing that troubles them slightly.'
Chopra concluded by noting that batting had been a strong point for Punjab Kings last season, and the franchise seems poised to continue relying on uncapped Indian talent. He expects Punjab to maintain this strategy in 2026, with Cooper Connolly enhancing the overseas player pool and offering greater flexibility.
