A Tale of Redemption: The Landlord's Journey to Healing
The Landlord's Illness
In a village, a landlord had been suffering from a chronic illness for many years. He sought help from numerous doctors, healers, and even tried various superstitious remedies.
Despite all efforts, he found no relief.
A Meeting with the Saint
One day, a saint visited the village, and the landlord went to pay his respects. With a heavy heart, he expressed his plight, stating, "I am the landlord of this village, owning hundreds of acres, yet I suffer from an incurable disease that no one can heal!"
The saint inquired about his ailment.
The Burden of Guilt
The landlord explained, "I experience severe bleeding and unbearable pain during bowel movements, making me feel as if I might die. Please help me!"
The saint closed his eyes and sat in silence for a moment before asking, "Would you mind if I asked you something?"
The landlord replied, "No, please go ahead!"
The saint probed, "Have you ever caused someone so much pain that they cursed you, and now you are suffering the consequences?"
The landlord denied, stating he had never hurt anyone.
A Moment of Reflection
The saint urged him to reflect deeply. "Have you ever taken someone’s rights, betrayed a friend, or deprived someone of their livelihood?"
The landlord fell silent, feeling ashamed.
He finally admitted, "I have a widowed sister-in-law who lives with her family. I denied her share of the land, fearing she might give it to her brothers later."
A Path to Healing
The saint advised him to start sending her a monthly allowance of one hundred rupees, a significant amount at that time.
The landlord began to send her money. After a few weeks, he returned to the saint, saying, "I feel seventy-five percent better!"
The saint questioned how much he was sending her.
The landlord replied, "Seventy-five rupees each month."
The saint explained, "That’s why you are not fully healed! You must give her her rightful share with respect and let her manage her own affairs. She has suffered greatly, and that pain is reflected in your own suffering."
A Lesson Learned
The landlord felt immense regret. He immediately called his sister-in-law and her brothers to the village and, in front of everyone, returned her rightful share of land and money, humbly asking for forgiveness.
She forgave him and blessed him and his family.
Soon after, the landlord's illness was completely cured.
A Final Thought
If you too are suffering from a chronic ailment, consider whether you have wronged anyone. Have you ever taken someone’s rights or caused them pain without them being able to voice it?
Remember, the divine justice is silent but inevitable.
