A Tale of Redemption: The Landlord's Journey to Healing
The Landlord's Struggle
In a village, a landlord had been suffering from a chronic illness for many years. He had consulted numerous doctors, healers, and even resorted to various superstitions, yet found no relief.
Despite his efforts, his condition remained unchanged.
A Meeting with the Saint
One day, a saint visited the village, and the landlord went to pay his respects. With a heavy heart, he expressed, "I am the landlord of this village, owning hundreds of acres, yet I am afflicted by an incurable disease that no one can heal!"
The saint inquired about his ailment.
The Painful Truth
The landlord explained, "I experience severe bleeding and unbearable pain during bowel movements, as if my life is slipping away. Please help me!"
The saint closed his eyes and sat in silence for a moment before asking, "Would you mind if I asked you something?"
The landlord replied, "No, please go ahead!"
The saint probed, "Have you ever caused someone so much pain that they cursed you, and now you are suffering the consequences?"
The landlord denied, stating he had never hurt anyone.
A Moment of Reflection
The saint urged him to reflect deeply. "Have you ever taken someone’s rights, betrayed a friend, or deprived someone of their livelihood?"
After a moment of contemplation, the landlord admitted, "I have a widowed sister-in-law who has been demanding her share of the land. I withheld it, fearing she might give it to her brothers."
A Path to Healing
The saint advised him to start sending her a monthly allowance of one hundred rupees, a significant amount at that time.
The landlord complied and began sending the money. A few weeks later, he returned to the saint, saying, "I feel seventy-five percent better!"
The saint questioned how much he was sending, to which the landlord replied, "Seventy-five rupees each month."
The saint explained, "That’s why your ailment hasn’t fully healed! You must give her her rightful share with respect, allowing her to use her money as she wishes. This is her property, and you have no claim over it. Think of the pain she endured, which is now manifesting in your suffering."
A Lesson Learned
The landlord felt immense regret. He immediately called his sister-in-law and her brothers, publicly returning her land and rightful money, while humbly asking for forgiveness for his past wrongs.
She forgave him and blessed him and his family.
Soon after, the landlord's health completely restored.
If you too are suffering from a chronic ailment, consider whether you have wronged anyone or taken away their rights. Reflect on whether you have caused someone so much distress that they felt powerless to speak up.
Remember, the divine justice is silent but inevitable.
