A Mother's Unwavering Love: How One Woman's Sacrifice Saved Her Son's Life

A Heartwarming Tale of Sacrifice
Berhampur: The love of a mother knows no bounds, and for one family in Berhampur, this love has been the key to a boy's survival.
On this Mother's Day, the remarkable story of S Sarada from Jaydur Nagar, located near Engineering School Road in Silk City, highlights an extraordinary act of sacrifice.
She made the life-saving decision to donate her kidney to her 17-year-old son, S Sai Biswanath, after he was diagnosed with severe kidney failure.
Initially, Biswanath, whose father S Sai Gopal is a local entrepreneur, showed no signs of health issues during his early years. However, his health began to decline significantly after he turned 15.
He experienced a loss of appetite, frequent fevers, and mental stress, which alarmed his parents.
Worried about their son's worsening condition, they sought medical help at a private hospital in the city.
After thorough examinations, doctors revealed on November 22, 2023, that 95% of Sai's kidneys were severely damaged, leaving his parents heartbroken.
The medical team recommended a kidney transplant and referred them to a private facility in Visakhapatnam.
There, they were advised to find a suitable donor. Without a moment's hesitation, Sarada stepped forward to donate one of her kidneys to save her son.
Her selfless gesture serves as a powerful reminder of the strength and unconditional love that mothers possess, often making the impossible achievable for their children. Initially, Gopal had offered to donate a kidney due to their financial hardships.
However, the medical team prioritized Sarada and conducted comprehensive health evaluations.
"Since my health was deemed suitable, I agreed to donate one of my kidneys to my son," Sarada shared. Biswanath underwent dialysis for three months.
"Eventually, my left kidney was successfully transplanted into my son's right lower abdomen on February 14, 2024," Sarada added.
The surgery was a success, and both mother and son are now leading healthy lives. Meanwhile, Gopal has been seeking government support to cover his son's ongoing medical expenses.
"I reached out to the Prime Minister, the President of India, the Chief Minister, the local legislator, and the district Collector for assistance," Gopal explained. Following his appeal, the family received ₹30,000 in aid from the Red Cross through the district administration.
Despite this support, the monthly medical expenses continue to weigh heavily on the family due to Gopal's limited financial resources.
Doctors have indicated that both Sarada and Biswanath will require lifelong medical care. Gopal continues to advocate for financial assistance from the government, urging state authorities to provide a monthly allowance of ₹10,000 for kidney patients, similar to provisions in other states.
