Jorhat, June 5: As the world celebrated World Environment Day by planting trees and committing to environmental protection, one individual in Assam's Jorhat district distinguished himself through his long-standing dedication to conservation.
For 37 years, Deho Bora from Garumara has been diligently converting barren land into a flourishing green habitat.
On this special day, Bora began his morning as he has for decades, surrounded by greenery and equipped with a bag of saplings. For him, environmental stewardship is not merely a one-day event but a lifelong endeavor.
His relentless efforts over nearly four decades have resulted in a lush forest spanning 14 bighas, serving as a sanctuary for various species of birds, animals, butterflies, bees, and insects.
What was once unremarkable land has transformed into a vibrant ecological haven.
Bora's forest is rich in biodiversity, attracting nature enthusiasts, students, researchers, and visitors from across Assam. The area also boasts a butterfly garden, fruit orchards, vegetable plots, and flowering plants, all contributing to the preservation of local ecosystems.
On this occasion, Bora highlighted that merely planting trees is insufficient. He called on individuals to take responsibility for nurturing saplings and ensuring their growth.
“I have dedicated 37 years to the environment. I consistently plant seeds and saplings. Students and visitors come to my garden, and it brings me joy to see birds and animals visiting the plantation. Protecting nature has become integral to my life,” he stated.
Throughout the years, Bora has actively collaborated with educational institutions, motivating students to forge a bond with nature.
He has set up flower gardens in schools and colleges and frequently participates in planting initiatives with youth, inspiring the next generation to become environmentally aware citizens.
A unique feature of his green sanctuary is a flower garden dedicated to the cultural icon Zubeen Garg. This garden, created in honor of the artist, embodies Bora's belief in the harmonious coexistence of nature and culture.
Visitors to Bora's conservation project often describe it as a rejuvenating retreat into nature.
Bora's 37-year commitment illustrates how one passionate individual can effect meaningful change and make significant contributions to environmental conservation.
