SHILLONG, Sept 5: Over 11,672 runners braved the fog and mist on the challenging routes of the 5th Sohra International Half Marathon held on Friday. The event attracted both national and international athletes across various age categories.
In the elite men's 21-km race, Satish Kumar Verma clinched victory with a time of 1:03:04, while Tejaswini Narendra Lambkane secured the elite women's title, finishing in 1:15:20.
In the Meghalayan categories, Wolbetstar Ramsiej led the men's 21-km race with a time of 1:03:26, and Marqueenless Ramsiej took the women's title at 1:23:55.
For the 10-km event, Wankyrmen L Mawphlang emerged victorious in the men's 18-39 age group, with Daplin Wahlang winning the corresponding women's event.
Bharat Bhushan triumphed in the men's 40-54 age group, while Mena Mary Wahlang won in the women's category. In the 55 and above age group, Swonding Mawlong topped the men's race, and Thlingda Wanniang won the women's event.
Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla praised the marathon's impressive growth from its humble beginnings. He noted that registration was intentionally limited to ensure excellent logistical support and facilities for all participants. Shylla emphasized the marathon's socio-economic benefits, highlighting its positive impact on local homestays, transport services, and farmers, while positioning Sohra as a premier sporting destination beyond its renowned natural beauty.
