2026 Senior Nationals Kabaddi Championship Kicks Off in Vadodara
Introduction to the Championship
The 72nd Senior Nationals Men's Kabaddi Championship is set to take place at the Sama Indoor Complex in Vadodara from February 24 to 27, 2026. Ajay Thakur, a former star from Himachal Pradesh and the head coach of Puneri Paltan, emphasizes that this tournament serves as the premier platform for kabaddi in India. With 29 teams and approximately 400 players participating under the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI), the event will showcase a blend of experienced athletes and rising stars, including notable performers from Pro Kabaddi League Season 12.
Significance of the Senior Nationals
Thakur remarked, "The Senior Nationals is the most significant event at the national level. Winning a medal here, whether gold, silver, or bronze, instills immense pride. Being a national champion signifies that you have triumphed over the entire country, which greatly boosts your confidence." He has previously led the Himachal Pradesh men's team in this championship, including during the 67th edition in 2020.
Pathway to National Representation
He further highlighted the tournament's critical role in the national selection process, stating, "Players who excel here after a year of hard work earn a chance to represent India. If you aspire to play for the national team, participating and performing well at the Senior Nationals is crucial."
Key Players and Teams to Watch
Thakur anticipates several prominent players to excel, including Aditya Shinde, Pawan Sehrawat, Ashu Malik, Naveen Kumar, and Sunil Kumar. He also pointed out traditional strong teams such as Railways and Maharashtra, along with solid contenders like Services and Haryana. Chandigarh is expected to showcase some impressive talent this year.
Opportunities for Young Athletes
Thakur emphasized the importance of this championship as a platform for younger players. He stated, "For young athletes, this is a significant opportunity. They can observe senior players closely, learn how they compete at the highest level, and gain valuable insights. This exposure serves as motivation and builds their confidence." With his extensive experience as both a celebrated player and a coach who recently led Puneri Paltan to the Pro Kabaddi League season 12 final, Thakur's insights underscore the Senior Nationals as the ultimate domestic arena where reputations are forged and future stars of India emerge.
