Political Shift in TMC
Following the announcement of the merger of 20 Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) into the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), Shantanu Day, the founder and national organizing secretary of NCPI, expressed his support for this development and indicated his willingness to engage in further discussions. In a conversation with a news agency, Day mentioned that he was initially unaware of these developments but welcomed the merger, which he learned about through social media and news reports.
Day explained that the decision was made by the party president and remarked, "If my party is progressing, why wouldn't I be happy?" He further stated his commitment to the party's growth and expressed readiness to collaborate with new members in supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and working alongside the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). He added that if Kakoli Dastidar reaches out to them, they would certainly go to Delhi, expressing hope for discussions between NCPI and the 20 TMC MPs, and mentioned plans for a press conference soon.
This announcement comes in the wake of increasing political unrest within the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), as a significant faction declared a rebellion on Sunday. Rebel MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar stated that the 20 Lok Sabha MPs have joined NCPI and will now support the NDA. After meeting with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Dastidar noted that the group she represents, which she claims constitutes more than two-thirds of the party's total strength, has submitted a letter demanding separate seating in Parliament.
She stated, "The twenty MPs elected from AITC met with the Speaker and submitted a letter requesting separate seating; these twenty MPs represent more than two-thirds of our total strength. We are merging into the Nationalist Citizens Party and will work for the country, collaborating with the NDA under the Prime Minister's leadership."
