Historic Achievement by Kritika Sharma

In an inspiring display of bravery and determination, 17-year-old Kritika Sharma, an NCC cadet from the Shri Renukaji Assembly constituency in Sirmaur district, Himachal Pradesh, has made history by reaching the summit of Mount Everest, which stands at 8,848.86 meters, the highest point on Earth.

Kritika not only raised the national flag but also displayed the NCC and her college flags at the peak, a moment that fills her state and the entire nation with pride. Her accomplishment exemplifies the spirit of youth and ambition, turning the phrase 'When courage challenges the Himalayas, history is written' into a tangible reality.

NCC Expedition Sets a National Record

Kritika was part of a 10-member NCC team that successfully summited Mount Everest on May 18, 2025, returning safely to Base Camp the next day. This expedition marks the NCC's third successful ascent of Everest, following previous climbs in 2013 and 2016.

The team consisted of five female and five male cadets, with an average age of 19. The youngest member was just 16 years old. All participants were selected through a rigorous nationwide process and underwent extensive training to prepare for the climb.

The cadets who reached the summit include: Cadet Monika (Rajasthan), Cadet Pratima Rai (West Bengal), Cadet Rifiness Warjri (Meghalaya), Cadet Kritika Sharma (Himachal Pradesh), Cadet Abida Afreen (Ladakh), Cadet Mohit Knathia (Jammu & Kashmir), Cadet Padma Namgail (Chandigarh), Cadet Virendra Singh Samant (Uttarakhand), Cadet Sachin Kumar (Uttarakhand), and Cadet Mukul Bangwal (Uttarakhand).

Praise from Climbers and Sherpas

Despite facing severe weather conditions and challenging terrain, the cadets demonstrated remarkable discipline, endurance, and teamwork. Their efforts received commendations from experienced Sherpas and international climbers, who praised their exceptional readiness and high spirits.

The expedition was the result of a comprehensive training program. The cadets participated in a preliminary expedition to Mt. Abi Gamin and attended a winter training camp at the Army Mountaineering Institute, Siachen Base Camp. Only the top-performing cadets from these training phases were chosen for the Everest mission.

The expedition was officially launched by the Defence Minister on April 3, 2025. Throughout the journey, the team adhered to strict safety protocols to ensure the well-being of all members.

A Triumph for India's Youth

This achievement is not just a personal victory for Kritika and her team; it reflects the potential, discipline, and spirit of India's youth. It also highlights the effectiveness of the NCC's training system and its contribution to nation-building.
