Exciting National Gatka Championship Scheduled
The National Gatka Association of India (NGAI) is set to host its 12th National Gatka Championship for both men and women from June 12 to 14, 2025, at the renowned Talkatora Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. This prestigious martial arts event will see participation from 16 state teams, featuring over 500 young athletes competing in various individual and team events, including Gatka Soti and Farri-Soti, across three exhilarating days.
Harjeet Singh Grewal, a State Awardee and the President of NGAI, elaborated on the event's purpose, stating that the championship aims to preserve, promote, and professionalize the traditional Sikh martial art of Gatka while offering a national platform for budding athletes to display their skills.
He emphasized, "This championship is part of our long-term 'Vision Document–2030' initiative, which seeks to elevate Gatka from a traditional martial art to an internationally recognized sport. Our goal is to prepare it for the Olympics by improving technical standards, ensuring gender equality through mixed combat events, and implementing IT-based tournament management systems."
Sukhchain Singh Kalsani, the Acting President of NGAI, remarked, "We are dedicated to providing our youth with safe and competitive platforms to promote our heritage. This championship reflects the increasing popularity of Gatka and our association's commitment to advancing it on both national and global stages."
General Secretary Harjinder Kumar and Finance Secretary Baljit Singh Saini announced that the opening ceremony will take place on June 12, while the closing ceremony on June 14 will recognize outstanding athletes with medals, trophies, and certificates. The NGAI invites sports fans, cultural supporters, and the general public to attend and cheer for India's Gatka champions during this landmark event.
