Filmmaker Vishesh Bhatt has shed light on the simultaneous release of Awarapan 2 and Batwara 1947, clarifying that the overlap was not a strategic clash.

In a conversation with a Media House, Bhatt explained that Awarapan 2 was originally slated for an earlier release. However, a delay occurred due to Emraan Hashmi's injury, which necessitated a revision of the filming schedule.

“We didn’t intend for it to be a clash,” Bhatt stated, elaborating that they had anticipated a release in April. Unfortunately, Emraan's injury during filming in December forced them to pause production. This led to a domino effect, causing multiple films to adjust their release dates.

“We were aiming for a date before April, but as the war began, many films like Toxic started moving their dates,” he noted, highlighting the shifting landscape of film releases.

Bhatt mentioned that distributors informed them about Batwara 1947 also being set for the same date. However, he believed that both films could thrive during the holiday season since they cater to different audiences.

“There were already other films lined up, including Hollywood releases. The distribution team indicated that Batwara was coming on the 14th, but our film is quite different. Plus, it’s a holiday period,” he added.

He expressed confidence that both films could coexist successfully, referencing historical instances where films like Gadar and Lagaan released simultaneously and both performed well.

Despite this, Bhatt admitted to having reservations before finalizing the date, stemming from his past experiences with the original Awarapan.

“It wasn’t just about the clash; I hesitated because I was emotionally affected by Awarapan 1,” he shared.

Reflecting on the 2007 film, he recalled the challenges of competing for audience attention against other releases. The team made significant efforts to ensure the film stood out.

“When Awarapan was released alongside two other films, we worked hard to capture the audience's attention,” he said, mentioning how they even got Emraan to perform at the IIFA Awards to promote the film.

Bhatt expressed concerns that Awarapan 2 might face similar challenges, especially with another major film releasing concurrently.

“We came from a time when we struggled to get noticed. I had this fear of making Awarapan again and not being recognized,” he admitted, but he was reassured by distributors and cinema owners that there was enough room for both films.

“People kept telling me that this time would be different, that there was enough capacity, and that we should proceed with the date. So, I agreed. The distributors and cinema owners also believed it was a good time for our release,” he concluded. Awarapan 2, the sequel to the 2007 cult classic, premiered in theaters today, coinciding with the Independence Day holiday. Emraan Hashmi reprises his role as Shivam Pandit in this film.
