Understanding Yawning During Worship: Spiritual Insights
The Spiritual Significance of Yawning
In Hindu traditions, the act of worship, known as *Puja*, along with devotion, is seen as a means to cleanse the inner self. However, it is common for individuals to experience frequent yawning when they sit down to chant mantras or meditate, often after lighting a lamp.
This phenomenon is usually linked to physical tiredness or lethargy. Yet, from a spiritual and scriptural viewpoint, there is a deeper meaning behind it. Let's delve into this further.
**Releasing Negative Energy**
Religious teachings suggest that engaging in worship or mantra chanting generates a strong flow of positive energy, both in the environment and within ourselves. The negative thoughts, mental stress, and *Tamasic* (impure or inert) vibrations that reside in our bodies cannot withstand this divine energy.
As this positive energy permeates our being, it forces out the negativity that has been buried deep within. Yawning is a manifestation of this process, indicating that negativity is being expelled from the body.
**The Mind's Conflict**
As per the *Achar Khand* (Code of Conduct) of the *Manusmriti*, there are instances when our physical presence is at the place of worship, yet our minds are entangled in worldly worries, business issues, or family matters. This oscillation between sacred mantras and everyday thoughts creates an internal struggle—a battle within the mind. Such distractions and lack of focus often result in yawning.
**How to Handle Yawning During Worship**
**Perform *Achaman***: If you find yourself yawning, perform *Achaman* (a ritual of sipping water for purification) or touch your right ear. Scriptures state that deities reside in the right ear, and touching it is believed to facilitate immediate purification.
**Cover Your Mouth**: When yawning, ensure to cover your mouth with your hand and snap your fingers.
**Practice Deep Breathing**: Engaging in deep breaths before starting the *Sankalp* (sacred resolve) for worship can help alleviate lethargy and yawning. Maintain a straight posture while sitting, as this promotes the proper flow of positive energy. Therefore, ensure your spine is straight.
