Understanding the Significance of Sharad Purnima in Hindu Tradition
The Importance of Sharad Purnima
Sharad Purnima is a significant festival in Hindu culture, celebrated on the full moon day (Purnima) during the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of Ashvin month. It is believed that engaging in rituals and prayers on this day invites the blessings of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Devotees typically fast and honor the Moon God, seeking joy and prosperity. A unique tradition involves placing *kheer* (a rice pudding) under the moonlight on the night of this festival.
Determining the Correct Date for Celebration
There is some uncertainty regarding whether Sharad Purnima falls on October 25th or 26th. To clarify, we consulted Acharya Pandit Anand Bhardwaj from Ujjain. According to the Vedic calendar, the full moon (*Purnima Tithi*) begins at 11:55 AM on October 25th and ends at 9:41 AM on October 26th. Ritual bathing and acts of charity (*daan*) will occur on October 26th, while the tradition of placing *kheer* under the moonlight will take place on the night of October 25th. It is recommended to set out the *kheer* after 9:00 PM, ensuring it is positioned to receive the moon's rays directly.
The Night of Nectar
Nectar descends at night.
On Sharad Purnima, the moon is said to shine exceptionally bright, showcasing all sixteen phases (*kala*). The cool moonlight is believed to have nectar-like properties, which is why the tradition of placing *kheer* outdoors exists. This night is also significant for worshipping Goddess Lakshmi, who is thought to descend to Earth and bless her devotees with happiness and prosperity.
Practices to Observe on Sharad Purnima
Things to avoid on Sharad Purnima
It is advised to refrain from consuming 'tamasic' (impure or stimulating) foods like meat and alcohol on Sharad Purnima, as this may displease Goddess Lakshmi and lead to financial difficulties. Wearing black, which symbolizes inauspiciousness, should also be avoided; instead, white clothing is considered auspicious. Additionally, it is important to maintain harmony at home and avoid conflicts, as such behavior is believed to upset Goddess Lakshmi.
