Understanding the Significance of Dhanteras: Traditions and Celebrations
The Essence of Dhanteras
Dhanteras is observed on the *Trayodashi* (thirteenth day) of the *Krishna Paksha* (waning moon phase) during Kartik month. This festival involves the veneration of Lord Dhanvantari, Goddess Lakshmi, and Lord Kubera. It is believed that honoring these deities enhances joy and wealth, paving the way for financial opportunities.
Traditions of Dhanteras
On this auspicious day, buying gold, silver, and utensils is a common practice. But do you know the origins of this tradition and how it has transformed over the years? Let's delve deeper into this fascinating topic.
The Mythological Background
During the *Samudra Manthan* (churning of the ocean), Lord Dhanvantari, a partial incarnation of Lord Vishnu, emerged on the *Trayodashi* of the *Krishna Paksha* in Kartik. He appeared with a *kalash* (vessel) filled with *amrit* (nectar), aiming to rid the world of ailments and suffering. This is why he is revered as the deity of Ayurveda and health. The tradition of buying metal items on Dhanteras stems from Lord Dhanvantari's association with a metallic vessel of nectar.

Then and Now: The Evolution

Over time, this custom has evolved, and nowadays, people purchase not only gold and silver but also electronic devices based on their financial capacity.
The Auspiciousness of Metal Purchases
Why is it auspicious to buy gold and silver on Dhanteras?
