Kalank Chaturthi 2026: Celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi

Kalank Chaturthi 2026: The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is being observed nationwide today, filled with devotion and joy, marking the start of the 12-day Ganeshotsav. On this auspicious occasion, idols of Lord Ganesha are placed in homes and *pandals* (temporary structures), where rituals are performed as per tradition. A significant belief associated with Ganesh Chaturthi is the avoidance of moon sighting on this day. Religious texts and customs consider the sighting of the moon on the *Chaturthi* (fourth day) of the *Shukla Paksha* (waxing phase) in the month of Bhadrapada to be inauspicious. Consequently, this day is often referred to as 'Kalank Chaturthi' (the Chaturthi of Stigma) in various regions. Let's delve into the religious importance of Kalank Chaturthi and the actions to take if one accidentally sees the moon...

Why is moon sighting deemed inauspicious?
According to legend, Lord Ganesha was once riding on his *vahana* (vehicle), a mouse (*Mooshak*), when it stumbled, causing Ganesha to fall. Chandra Dev (the Moon God) laughed at this incident, showcasing his pride in his beauty. Lord Ganesha was displeased with this mockery and cursed the Moon, stating that anyone who saw the moon on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi would face false accusations or stigma. Although Chandra Dev later sought forgiveness, Ganesha did not fully lift the curse, leading to the ongoing tradition of refraining from moon sighting during Ganesh Chaturthi.

Why is it referred to as Kalank Chaturthi?
It is believed that anyone who sights the moon on this day may encounter false accusations, even if innocent. This is why this *Chaturthi* is also known as Kalank Chaturthi. On Ganesh Chaturthi, devotees are encouraged to concentrate on worshipping Lord Ganesha, performing *Aarti*, and reciting mantras. It is believed that worshipping Ganesha, the *Vighnaharta* (Remover of Obstacles), helps alleviate life's challenges and brings blessings of joy and prosperity.

What to do if the moon is accidentally seen?
If someone inadvertently sees the moon, there is no need for alarm; one should simply trust in Lord Ganesha. It is customary to worship Ganesha, seek forgiveness, and chant Ganesha mantras after the sighting. Many traditions also suggest listening to or reading the tale of the Syamantak Mani, which is associated with Lord Krishna and revolves around the theme of being cleared of false accusations.
